Injured Jockeys' Fund

Who are the IJF?

The Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) is an independent charity which provides care, compassion and support for injured jockeys and their families.

Once a jockey is injured the IJF keeps track of them for the rest of their days. They are still looking after the widows of jockeys killed at Cheltenham in 1972, at Uttoxeter in 1963 and at Lingfield in 1994.

Last year, 2002, the IJF paid out in grants, medical aid and other charitable expenses of £860,000. Their only guaranteed source of income is their investment income of £374,000. Therefore if they are to maintain their commitment to the injured jockeys and their families they are requiring assistance from the public.

The IJF's site is at www.ijf.org.uk.

How can we help?

One of two ways. The first is to visit their site and to order some of their items from their store. Christmas cards and calendars are popular purchases. We've, for example, have ordered their pocket diaries which make for excellent presents to friends who are race-goers.

The second way is that during November we're having a charity month and for this month our normally free selections are hidden away. To get access of these selections and the ratings all you have to do is e-mail us telling us that you will send us a cheque in favour of the "Injured Jockeys' Fund", for at least £10 (though we've received numerous cheques for £20, one of £25, £50 and even £100) and we'll send you details of where to send the cheque and also the password for the locked page.

Other than that it must be stressed that UK Horse Racing has no connection with the IJF other that we are in total admiration of their sterling work.
