UK Horse Racing Newsletter

Number 9 - August 2007

Introduction

The flat season is now drawing to a close, the evenings are starting to draw in and there's fewer and fewer evening races. In itself this is a relief as this summer it felt at times being a long slog from the first race to the last. There will the occasional floodlit meeting but nothing like that we've been given in the past few weeks where's it's been non-stop from noon until dusk.

There's been a lot of work on the two sites since the last newsletter and we think that this may be a good time to mention a few of them.

The LOST Lays

Over on the Weak Favourites laying site the LOST lays have been divided into two seperate selection criteria; one system for handicaps and the other for non-handicaps.

Both of these laying systems have been performing extremely well of late and the latest figures show the folowing results.

These laying systems work on the premise that in that race there are far stronger horses than some of the low priced horses and if these are identified they are then laid. If you look at the results pages then it can be seen that there are a good number of horses which go off at low prices and we know of many people who do very well laying at less than 6.0 on the exchanges.

The two LOST systems, as well as the Lay-0s, have been recently updated to include a new filter which is designed to make these results even better. Early indications (though it is too soon to tell) that this filter is working remarkably well.

LOST (handicaps)

Winning Lays: 503. Losing Lays: 90.
Strike Rate: 84.82%
Profit/Loss: 140.95
ROI: 23.77%

From the Lost (handicaps) results page.

LOST (non-handicaps)

Winning Lays: 82. Losing Lays: 13.
Strike Rate: 86.32%
Profit/Loss: 43.99
ROI: 46.31%

From the Lost (handicaps) results page.

The Lay-0 Lays

So named because these favourite, or expected favourite, horses pass zero filters and then they are suggested for laying.

Like the LOSTs they are nice and steady and because this is an older system they have more data and we think that these results speak for themselves.

Winning Lays: 1,032. Losing Lays: 196.
Strike Rate: 84.04%
Profit/Loss: 250.09
ROI: 20.37%

eMail Address Policy

It seems that some people don't understand our eMail policy.

We've been contacted dozens of times recently by various people wanting to buy our newletter and customer lists and each time they've been given short shrift.

So, to clarify - we never give out any information regarding any of the accounts or eMail addresses registered with us. We don't give away eMail addresses, we don't sell them and we don't swap them with anyone. And we don't ever mail out on behalf of anyone else or for their products. Believe me, we've been asked many times to sell on our address list and each time each request has politely, but firmly, been refused.

So, what we are saying is that your details will be kept in the strictest of confidence.

Archive Server

We've placed our ratings in an open server over in Canada for people to have a look at our old ratings. It's taken us a while to find this host as we wanted somewhere which wasn't too expensive but offered up lots of storage space. As our ratings archive contains thousands of files taking up a couple of gigabytes of data we wanted to make sure that we found a good home for them.

The ratings server can be examimed here at http://www.draiggollwng.com/ukhorseracingarchive/default.asp.

Racing Data Section

We've had a good number of requests to show more information on the Race Data section of the UKHR site.

We've implemented a page showing what a horse is wearing today and what it has worn in the past as a few members are investigating systems involving head gear.

An example from today's racing (29th August) is of Court Of Appeal which is running at Catterick.

Catterick 4:20 - 1 Court Of Appeal (Cheekpiece Tonguestrap). Cheekpieces: 19 runs, 7 wins. Tonguestrap: 57 runs, 11 wins. Visor: 1 run, 0 wins.

We've added a new page, where one can click on a horse's name and see how it ran last time out. Additionally a good number of the Race Data pages have been improved after many user requests.

Ratings Update

One useful new feature is that if two horses meet in a race and have met before then the history of that match is listed at the bottom of each horse's detailed history.

For example, today (29th August) King Egbert and Heavens Walk In meet in the 4.10 at Kempton Park. They've met three times before and from the ratings one have a look at those individual races to see what could have favoured each horse on each of those occasions.

Holmes' Results Grabber

One very useful tool, which is very popular is the Holmes Results Grabber which puts the results of the races into the CSV files which we produce daily.

The CSV files, when updated with the results, are presumably imported into our subscribers' databases so that they can work on selections based on our ratings. The updated Results Grabber is now version 2.8 and it has been written to handle the new course at Dundalk.

The new version of the Results Grabber can be found within the members' area.

Work In Progress

Weak Favourites Results

Over the course of the next few days the Results pages on the Weak Favourite site should be complete.

Currently all the results for each system are displayed, as they ought, but the filtering code isn't complete. When this is complete then you will be able to see what happens when one looks at only those horses which run in, say, Ireland or in handicaps or just on the all-weather.

Additionally the price bands can be examimed to see what happens if only horses for a certain price range are laid. There is also a Betfair Modifier which one can enter a number into and it wiill modify the price figure.

So, for example, one can look at horses to lay at between, say, 1.5 and 3.0 to lay and then add a modifier of 5% to see what one could have paid given this amount of overbet on the exchanges. The results pages on the UKHR site are now working and these can be seen here at http://www.ukhorseracing.co.uk/results/default.asp and this functionality will be available in the next few days on the Weak Favourite site.

UK Horse Racing Ratings

It has come to a number of people's attention that the layout of the ratings has added a section at the foot of each page of the summary sheet.

This is because we plan to put more information concerning the horse and trainer's form. This should make the Ratings more comprehensive and even more useful.

XML Archive

As you may be aware, all of our selections have an XML associated with them.

We are looking at a way of storing the XML files onto the archive server so that one can download everything that we've selected from both sites in a more computer friendly format.
